Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a regenerative therapy that uses stem cells drawn from your own bone marrow to stimulate natural healing. Unlike synthetic treatments or donor products, BMAC is 100% autologous — meaning it uses only your own cells, eliminating any risk of rejection.
What Is Bone Marrow?
Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside your bones responsible for producing blood cells. It is also the richest source of stem cells in the adult human body — particularly at the iliac crest (the top of the hip bone). The hematopoietic component alone produces approximately 500 billion blood cells per day.
Two types of cells in bone marrow are critical to regenerative therapy:
- Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) — form blood, immune cells, and mesenchymal stromal cells that become bone, cartilage, and connective tissue
- Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs) — differentiate into blood vessel lining cells, enabling new vessel formation (therapeutic angiogenesis)
How Is BMAC Collected?
At StemCellMD, we use the Marrow Cellution™ system — a patented closed-end lateral aspiration device. Unlike traditional open-ended trocar needles that allow peripheral blood to dilute the stem cell yield after the first 1–2mL, the Marrow Cellution system collects exclusively from undisturbed lateral marrow spaces.
The result: consistently high colony-forming unit (CFU) counts across every aliquot collected — equivalent to iliac crest autograft, without the donor-site morbidity.
What Conditions Does BMAC Treat?
Published clinical research supports BMAC for a wide range of conditions including knee osteoarthritis, hip avascular necrosis, rotator cuff tears, non-union fractures, spinal fusion augmentation, ankle osteochondral defects, and more. Emerging evidence supports its use in systemic conditions involving compromised vascularity.
